I am a graduate student at Texas State University studying mass communication with a new media concentration. I instructed two lab sections in MC 1313–Writing for Mass Media during the 2009-2010 academic year.
From 2007 to 2009, I was the community editor of the Llano County Journal. While there, I won awards for my news writing from the Texas Press Association and was named Journalist of the Year by the West Texas Press Association. I covered bank picnics and cases that went before the Supreme Court; murder trials and commissioners court; and all of the weird stuff in between (small town politics has no shortage of weird stuff).
In 2005, I served with the Texas Army National Guard in Iraq as a sergeant (E-5). I also served in Bosnia in 1999 with the U.S. Army.
But what does all of that mean? Well…I can write, take pictures, edit video, design Web sites, lead people, follow orders, and deal with a fluid and dynamic battlespace (that’s Army talk for what journalists deal with every day).
In other words, I’m training to be a backpack journalist and Web editor who can contribute to the future path of journalism.
